The former Manchester United was in a mischievous mood ahead of Thursday’s Europa League meeting with his old club.

Jose Mourinho has jokingly claimed he could be awarded a fourth Premier League winner’s medal and given a bonus from his time at Manchester United if Manchester City are found guilty of the 115 charges.

The Premier League brought the charges against City in February last year which relate to a series of financial breaches, and the case is currently being heard. An outcome is expected early next year, but City strenuously deny any wrongdoing.

Should they be found guilty, the punishments could involve being kicked out of the league, a points deduction and even retrospective action relating to the titles won in recent years.

Never shy of odd piece of skulduggery himself, Mourinho quipped that, should City have their 2018 title stripped, it would mean his United side would be de facto champions. The Red Devils finished second and 19 points behind Guardiola’s centurions in 2017/18.

Speaking ahead of a reunion with United in the Europa League on Thursday night, the now Fenerbahce boss was evidently trying to wind up City fans.

"As you know, we won the Europa League [in 2017] and we finished second in the Premier League [in 2018],” said the 61-year-old. “I think we still have a chance to win that league because maybe they punish Man City with points and maybe we win that league. Then they have to pay me the bonus and give me the medal."

Mourinho won three Premier League titles during his time at Chelsea but failed to finish top in two and half years at Old Trafford, before he was sacked in December 2018.

The Portuguese manager will face United for the 25th time in his career on Thursday night and the first since leaving English football. Erik ten Hag’s side are in desperate need of a win after an underwhelming start to the Europa League, which has seen them draw both of the opening two games.
