Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day 2, Arsenal favourite Ian Wright has admitted Manchester City’s performance against Aston Villa’s was ‘quite frightening’ ahead of the top of the table clash on Wednesday. Pep Guardiola’s won 3-1 over the weekend courtesy of goals by Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan and Riyah Mahrez.

They are now only three points behind the Gunners ahead of the clash at the Emirates Stadium. However, the London club do still have a game in-hand.

Prior to their victory over Villa, City lost to Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 and were desperate to bounce back. They looked a lot better and pundit Wright has said: “They were very much improved. All the working parts were functioning well again.

“They had their hunger, their drive and their quality. It was all back. They do like playing against Villa. There was a speed about the way they were passing into eachother.”

He added: “For me it is quite frightening because we (Arsenal) have got them on Wednesday. To see them back in this kind of form is quite ominous. They look like they are back.

“What you have to look at what happened against Tottenham (last week), Kevin De Bruyne didn’t start. Erling Haaland didn’t have a touch in the box, they weren’t even looking for him. This looks like a different team in the way they were playing.

“They looked more energised, they were quicker, they were sharper. They seemed like they have got it back in their heads where they need to be.”

City brought defender Ruben Dias and De Bruyne back into the starting XI against Villa and they seemed to make a big difference. Guardiola’s men have more experience of challenging for title than Arsenal and they will be hoping that plays into their hands now after returning to winning ways.
