Wales confirmed their choice of replace Rob Page on Tuesday.

Former Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy has been appointed as the new manager of Wales.

The 44-year-old, who retired from professional football in 2014, was Vincent Kompany’s assistant manager at Burnley last season but his future became uncertain this summer after his former City team-mate was appointed as the new boss at Bayern Munich. Bellamy had also previously worked with Kompany at Anderlecht.

The Welshman’s appointment on the international stage is his first head coach role, with Bellamy replacing the outgoing Rob Page.

“It’s an incredible honour for me to be given the opportunity to lead my country and it’s the proudest moment of my career. It was always my ultimate dream to become the Cymru head coach and I am ready for the challenge,” he told the Welsh FA’s website.

“I will give my full commitment to develop this team and I am passionate to bring continued success into Welsh football. I can’t wait to get started with our Nations League games in September.”

Bellamy’s first games will come against Turkey, Iceland and Montenegro in the Nations League between September and November, before World Cup qualifiers begin in 2025. He has penned a four-deal with Wales, having earned 78 international caps as a player.

Bellamy takes over a side in decline since the 2022 World Cup. Failure to qualify for Euro 20024 ultimately cost Page his job, but Wales also struggled across two games in June, drawing against Gibraltar and losing 4-0 to Slovakia.

During his distinguished career, Bellamy also represented Norwich City, Coventry City, Newcastle United, Celtic, Blackburn Rovers, Liverpool, West Ham United and Cardiff City.
