Manchester City look to have completed their first piece of business of the January transfer window with the sale of Ferran Torres to Barcelona.

This is according to sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, who claimed on Wednesday afternoon the 21-year-old’s move from City to the Spanish giants is a ‘done deal’ and will be confirmed in the ‘coming hours’.

The news comes days after Romano tweeted that Torres has agreed personal terms with Barcelona, but a fee had not been finalised.

However, this is now not the case with the Spanish international set to join Xavi’s side for an initial €55m with €10m in add-ons.

Torres has only made seven appearances in all competitions for City this season, with his lack of game-time is due to a foot injury he suffered on international duty with Spain in October. The 21-year-old has three goals to his name and one assist.

A move to the Catalan club might be confirmed soon, however, he won’t officially be able to join his new team until their transfer window opens on 3 January.

The reason behind the switch to the 26-time La Liga winners won’t just be to play for one of the world’s biggest teams. With City’s current strength in depth in the forward positions, minutes would be potentially limited for Torres upon his return from injury, thus seeking game-time elsewhere.

Xavi’s side currently sit seventh in the Spanish top flight, two points off a top four position. They have also dropped into the Europa League for the first time in 17 years after coming third in their Champions League group, behind Bayern Munich and Benfica.

The fee received for Torres could be used by Pep Guardiola to sign a striker, with the Sky Blues linked with Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic and AC Milan’s Rafael Leao.
