Erling Haaland can equal Sergio Aguero’s Premier League record when Manchester City face Newcastle
The Norwegian netted his 100th goal for the club in last week’s draw against Arsenal.
Erling Haaland has had a decent start to the season, that’s fair to say.
He’s netted in all five Premier League matches so far in 2024/25, one against Chelsea, then back-to-back hat-tricks against Ipswich Town and West Ham United, followed by a game-winning brace at home to Brentford. Last week’s opener in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal, remarkably, brought him to 10 goals for the campaign before the end of September.
He also secured another Premier League record, with 10 goals in the opening five the best start anyone has ever made to a new campaign.
Haaland has another target in his sights as Manchester City head north to take on Newcastle United. A goal at St James’ Park would see him equal Sergio Aguero’s record of netting in all of the opening six matches of a Premier League season, a feat which the legendary Argentinian managed in 2019/20.
However, Haaland has an underwhelming record against the Magpies - certainly for his peerless standards. The Norwegian has scored just once in four previous appearances against Eddie Howe’s side, although he should be fresh after having a full week to prepare for Saturday’s game.
Haaland was granted compassionate leave to attend the funeral of a family friend in Norway, and missed the Carabao Cup win over Watford, but Pep Guardiola confirmed he will be back for the Newcastle game.
The striker’s goal against Arsenal was also his 100th for City in just 105 games, including 73 from 71 Premier League appearances.
Speaking ahead of Saturday's game, Howe even claimed he could see Haaland overtake Newcastle legend Alan Shearer’s long-held Premier League record of 260 goals.
“I don't think there are many who are going to get close to Alan because his record over the time that he did it is truly incredible,” said the former Bournemouth boss. “Really, with the amount of goals that he scored, when you see the numbers, that's going to be some target to beat.
“But you’re probably looking at someone like Erling Haaland, who's had an incredible start. His appetite for goals is incredible when you watch him play. I'm a big admirer of his, I'm a big admirer of his game.”
