Gareth Southgate confirmed his 30-man group on Tuesday, which will be cut to 26 before the tournament.

Four Manchester City players have been included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man England training squad ahead of Euro 2024.

The Three Lions announced the group on Tuesday afternoon, with City quartet Kyle Walker, John Stones, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden all called up as expected. But there is no place for City players Rico Lewis and Kalvin Phillips.

The latter is currently nursing an injury that prevented him playing in West Ham United’s last four games of the season. Phillips endured a disastrous loan spell at the Hammers; he last started a game on 10 March, and his omission was expected.

As for Lewis, he has been called up to England’s last two squads but misses out on a spot in the 33-man group. The teenager has played just 19 minutes over the last month and, like Phillips, his exclusion was not a surprise.

But there were plenty of shocks in Southgate’s squad, which featured former City keeper James Trafford. Liverpool pair Jarell Quansa and Curtis Jones were among the surprise inclusions along with Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton. Jarrad Branthwaite and Kobbie Mainoo were named in March’s international selection and have retained their spot in this squad, while Luke Shaw is back despite last playing for Manchester United in February.

There were several notable exclusions from Southgate, including Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford, who between them have 141 England caps. Reece James, Ben White, Eric Dier, Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho, Callum Wilson and Dominic Solanke also missed out.
