The former Manchester City star was at the Etihad on Saturday to watch the 5-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

David Silva received a lifetime season card from Manchester City on Saturday, in recognition of his outstanding achievements with the club.

The Spaniard made 436 appearances for City between 2010 and 2020 and is considered by many to be the club’s greatest-ever player. During a decade at the Etihad, Silva won four Premier League titles and was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year on three occasions.

The 38-year-old’s departure came during the Covid pandemic, meaning fans did not get a proper chance to say farewell to the diminutive midfielder. Silva joined Real Sociedad after leaving City and his commitments meant he was unable to return in the subsequent years, excluding a quick visit to his statue outside the Etihad which was unveiled in 2021.

The former Valencia man made a pitstop to be pictured alongside the sculpture in September 2022 when Sociedad played Manchester United in a Europa League fixture.

Having retired last summer, Silva’s diary is now considerably less stacked, and he made his much-anticipated return to City on Saturday when he was presented to the home crowd on the pitch alongside his family, prior to the 5-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Like several ex-players, Silva was awarded with a lifetime season card by chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak. The World Cup winner received the gift at City’s training base on Saturday ahead of the game.

“We will never forget what you have done for this club. We’re so happy. That’s why I wanted to give you this, a small recognition from the club for everything you’ve done. Thank you very much,” said Al Mubarak.

City legends Joe Hart, Yaya Toure, Vincent Kompany, Sergio Aguero, Jill Scott, Karen Bardsely have also received a lifetime season card. Several ex-players, like Silva, also have a mosaic at the club’s training ground.
