The Manchester City attacker scored his team's only goal of the game as they beat Sevilla in Greece.

Kyle Walker has told Cole Palmer to learn from his team-mates and manager as the Manchester City attacker scored a decisive goal in the European Super Cup win over Sevilla.

The 21-year-old headed in from a superb Rodri cross in the 63rd minute to equalise for City after Youssef En-Nesyri netted in the first half. A 1-1 draw after 90 minutes in Greece forced penalties, and after City scored all five in the shoot-out, Nemanja Gudelj’s missed effort ensured the Champions League winners once again collected silverware.

Of all City's players, Palmer can be particularly pleased after a superb second half in the Super Cup. The academy product struggled for regular minutes last term but was handed an important start against Sevilla in a European final. It’s also Palmer’s second goal in just three matches this season, after City’s no.87 netted in the Community Shield two weeks ago.

With Kevin De Bruyne out injured and Riyad Mahrez moving on in the summer, there could be more game time for Palmer this season, and Walker encouraged his young team-mate to seize the opportunity.

“This guy is incredible,” the defender said on TNT Sports, when asked about Palmer after the match. “He has good guys to learn off and probably the best manager in the world.

“He just needs to keep going, keep his feet on the floor, which he does really, and keep scoring goals - he’s got one in the Community Shield, one in the Super Cup. If he keeps improving and keeps listening to me behind him, he’ll be fine.”

Asked for his view on the match, Walker added: “It was always going to be a tough game at the start of the season but I thought the lads put in a good performance. I just feel we need to be more clinical in front of goal, but we got the job done and that’s what we came here to do.

“We rode our luck a bit but we got there. The main thing was to come here and it’s tough conditions - you can see everyone’s sweating and it’s really hot, but to come away with this cup that we worked so hard for last season, to win a Champions League and now finally win this and put it in the trophy cabinet in Manchester is great.”
