Former Manchester City star Janine Beckie is attracting interest from Women’s Super League (WSL) rivals Everton and Tottenham Hotspur. The Canadian forward only departed in April 2022 but could be set for a swift return to England with both sides vying for her signature in the January transfer window.
Currently at Portland Thorns, the 28-year-old has endured a frustrating time since returning to the American top tier and could be offered a route back to the WSL with the Toffees and Spurs both interested. Beckie was part of the Canadian side that won gold at the Olympics in 2021 but struggled to get regular game time under Gareth Taylor towards the end of her City career, featuring in the WSL just 11 times.
She joined the Citizens on a one-year deal from Sky Blue FC back in 2018, having formed a solid reputation across the pond with both Houston Dash and Texas Tech University and remains well liked at club after being part of the squad that lifted the Women’s FA Cup in 2019 and 2020.
Becoming a fan’s favourite early on during her time at the club, Beckie was tied to a new two year contract in 2020 and announced she was “no doubt” in her mind when it came to commiting her future to the club.
“The last two years have been more than I could have imagined” she said on the confirmation of her new deal.
She returned back to the NWSL with Portland Thorns in April of the year despite several offers from clubs across Europe, citing the return Stateside was the right move for her career. However, while nothing is imminent, it is understood that a trio of clubs - which include both Everton and Tottenham Hotspur - are interested in her availability ahead of the WSL’s January transfer window.
