Once thriving industrial areas, they were densely populated with terraced housing for factory workers.
Hulme became known for its infamous 1960s crescents - modernist housing that later fell into disrepair.
Moss Side is a historically working class area which struggled with crime and poverty in late 20th Century as some of these photos reveal.

1. Hulme and Moss Side past
Exteriors of some of the the notorious high density council housing at Hulme crescents in south west Manchester. The apartment blocks were built in the 1960's but quickly deterioted and the area became blighted by drug and gun crime. Gangs formed and parts of south Manchester became known as 'Gunchester'.
