Sergio Aguero statue: where is it, what age is he, what are his stats & what’s the Manchester City v QPR goal?

Manchester City have unveiled the statue on the ten year anniversary of the famous ‘93:20’ goal

The long-awaited unveiling of Sergio Aguero’s statue at the Etihad Stadium has taken place, and it has brought back great memories for Manchester City fans.

The Argentine striker is fully deserving of his statue, which now sits proudly outside of the stadium he scored so many goals in.

Here’s all you need to know about the statue, where it is located and why it is so significant to City fans.

Where is the statue located?

Situated on the east side of the Etihad Stadium, the large-scale statue of Aguero was created by award-winning sculptor Andy Scott and has been constructed using thousands of welded pieces of galvanised steel.

At night, Aguero’s statue and those of Vincent Kompany and David Silva (which are in the same area of the stadium), will be specially illuminated with blue tinted lighting.

Scott, who is one of the most respected sculptors of his generation and is known for his large-scale figurative pieces, created the statue of Aguero entirely from his studio in Philadelphia, before it was transported to Manchester earlier this month by Etihad Cargo.

What does the statue depict?

The statue shows Sergio Aguero celebrating his iconic goal against Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the 2011-12 Premier League season.

Why is the goal significant?

Aguero scored 184 Premier League goals, which puts him way out in front of City’s top scorer in the competition.

The 94th minute goal against QPR has gone down as one of the most famous in Premier League history.

Needing a winning goal to snatch the Premier League title from the hands of Manchester United, Aguero picked up a pass from Mario Ballotelli and fired the ball into the net, sending City fans in the stadium and around the world into raptures.

The goal won City their first Premier League title, and kicked off what has been a golden age for the club, and one which is still going strong after 10 years.

What has Sergio Aguero said about the statue?

The man himself said: “Truthfully, it is a very beautiful thing for me, to see myself 10 years ago is very moving.

“In those 10 years I was able to win a lot of trophies and was able to help the club become one of the most important in the world.

“I am very grateful to the Club for making this statue in recognition of my football career in Manchester. It is something very special.”

What has Andy Scott said about his creation?

Sculptor, Andy Scott, added: “It has been an honour to work on a project that means so much to Manchester City fans around the world in celebration of such an important player in the life of this football club.

“I was under no illusions about how important this was to the club, to the fans, to Sergio himself and I hope that this statue brings joy and happiness to all who see it.”

What has the City chairman said about the statue?

City’s Chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak said about the statue: “Sergio Aguero’s contribution to Manchester City in a defining era for the Club cannot be overstated.

“He is without doubt one of the greatest players that has ever played the game.

“When our fans think of Sergio, they are immediately drawn to the iconic moment of 93:20 and the goal that secured the club’s first league title in 44 years, but as his record of 260 goals for the club demonstrates, his legacy and impact at Manchester City go far beyond that.”
