Peaky Blinders is one of the most popular shows in the UK.

It’s been nine years since Tommy Shelby rode in on a black horse, and since that time the show has gone from strength to strength.

Peaky Blinders is about the Shelby family from Birmingham, who go from local gangsters to one of the most powerful families in the UK.

The six series are set between 1919, just after the end of the First World War and flow all the way through to 1933.

Despite being set primarily in Small Heath and other parts of Birmingham, the show is mostly filmed elsewhere - here’s where.

Castlefield was used for its unique cobbled streets to depict 1930s Small Heath.

Small Heath is where the Shelbys were originally based.

The Peaky Blinders director, Anthony Byrne lives in Manchester, and suggested filming a large portion of season six in the city.

Manchester was a perfect fit for the sixth season because it had the cobbled streets, canals and bridges which gave the final series of Peaky Blinders a real sense of authenticity.

Cheshire

A later addition in the show was the Shelby Manor, which embodies  Tommy Shelby’s (Cillian Murphy) growth from street thug to one of the most powerful men in the country.

The manor, however, is Arley Hall and gardens which is in Cheshire, in the North West of England.

Liverpool

Tommy Shelby’s greatest battles throughout all six series are the ones inside his head.

This unrelenting anguish makes for some memorable scenes featuring Tommy Shelby in a church.

These scenes were filmed in Liverpool Cathedral which was built between 1904 and 1978.

Other scenes have also been filmed nearby, like the meeting with the  British Union of Fascists.

Yorkshire

Yorkshire has played home to some iconic scenes right from the off, and this was because the first series of Peaky Blinders was partially funded by Screen Yorkshire, a subsidy that meant the majority of the show was filmed in Yorkshire.

Other Yorkshire locations used include Skipton, Undercliffe Cemetery Bradford, Peel Park Bradford, Leeds Town Hall, Ilkley Winter Gardens, Newby Hall & Gardens, Salts Mill, Saltaire, Brooke’s Mill and Huddersfield.

West Midlands

The connection between Peaky Blinders and Birmingham has been well established therefore the right thing to do was to shoot as many scenes as possible in the West Midlands.

The Black Country Living Museum, located in Dudley, ten miles west of Birmingham is a recreation of an early 20th century world and was used to film some of the series’ most memorable scenes.
