The Premier League has decided against introducing semi-automated VAR technology ahead of next season. The technology was successfully used at the World Cup last winter in Qatar but will not be brought into England just yet.

As per the Daily Mail, it was ‘considered’ but ultimately the decision has been made to not introduce it to the top flight just yet. This means that both Manchester United and Manchester City will have to wait for now.

The technology, known as SOAT, tracks players limbs to see if they are offside. An alert is then sent to VAR for someone to check over it.

It will be used in Spain’s La Liga in the next campaign. It was used operational in West Ham’s Europa Conference League final win over Serie A side Fiorentina in Prague last Wednesday.

United are back in the Champions League next term and will use this summer to bolster their ranks. Erik ten Hag is gearing up for his second full campaign in charge at Old Trafford after guiding the club back into the top four in his first following his arrival from Ajax.

City, on the other hand, have their sights set on the treble as they take on Inter Milan in the Champions League final this weekend in Istanbul. Their winger Bernardo Silva has said: “The main message that he (Guardiola) passes to us in these matches, not only against Real Madrid, but in this match against Real Madrid, because we’re in a semi-final of the Champions League, and because last year we had a match with them where they knocked us out in a strange way.

“It was tough for us to accept it, so we have to understand that we can lose because we’re playing against one of the best teams in the world, but we have to reach the end of the tie and have no regrets.”

He added: “We have to reach the end of the tie with no regrets, knowing that we did everything we could possibly do to have the best chance to reach the final.”
