Luton Town have issued an immediate ban after a supporter was captured on video ‘punching’ Manchester United youngster Amad.

The 20-year-old has spent the season on loan with the Black Cats, playing a key role in the club’s surprise run to the Championship play-offs.

He has scored 14 goals and provided four assists in 42 senior appearances as Sunderland were knocked out 3-2 on aggregate by Luton in the play-off semi-finals.

The Hatters claimed a 2-0 win in the second leg on Tuesday to set up a final with Coventry City at Wembley but the victory was overshadowed by a fan hitting out at Amad as he went to collect the ball for a throw-in.

Luton have issued a statement on the matter and confirmed a police investigation will take place.

It read: “Luton Town is aware of an incident involving a home spectator and a Sunderland player during last night’s Championship play-off semi-final at Kenilworth Road.

“A lengthy Club ban will be immediately issued and the incident is now also subject to a police investigation.

“Luton Town wishes to clarify that any such supporter behaviour is not acceptable in any way and will take swift, appropriate action to ensure that similar actions do not happen again. No further comment will be made by the club at this time.”

Amad penned an emotional message to Sunderland fans after the club’s hopes of back-to-back promotions were ended.

“I know you are sad, we all are,” he wrote on Twitter. “A group of young guys who fought until the last minute, I can only be proud to have been part of this team.

“No regrets, just proud of what each of us has become over the course of the season. Thank you for the love. Ha’way the lads.”

On Instagram, Amad added: “I have loved every moment here in Sunderland. I wish you well and will support you for the rest of my life.”

United boss Erik ten Hag has already revealed the player will be handed first-team opportunities at Old Trafford next season.

“Yes, of course,” Ten Hag replied when asked if the player was part of his plans next season. “We loan such players to let them develop and make progress. To bring them back... that is the aim of a loan.

“We are really strong on them on the matter of the way we mentor them, and so we follow them and we have communication through all the season, especially (technical director) Darren Fletcher.

“He invests a lot in such processes and the aim is to bring them back as a better player and with better experience.”
