The annual Manchester Half Marathon got underway today with around 14,000 expected to have taken part - some of which were listed in the Elite Wheelchair, Men’s and Women’s groups. All those running will have conquered their own challenges, whether that be making the distance, raising money for charity, or beating a personal best.

It wasn’t just the Elite athletes taking part, as this year’s highly anticipated event was classed a special ‘Heroes Edition’, celebrating heroic local runners. Before the run took place, Nick Rusling, CEO of the organisers, Human Race, said: “Our real-life heroes might not have superpowers or wear capes, but they are there.

“Some of our runners are heroes as they have overcome great barriers, some are running for their own personal heroes who were or are special to them, and some are simply their own heroes just for taking on the half marathon challenge.”

As you’d expect, though, those leading at the front of the pack - or rather breaking away from it - were indeed the most experienced and talented of athletes. Here’s how those in the Elite Wheelchair, Men’s and Women’s categories got on.
