Manchester United prospect Charlie Wellens has been handed a chance to gain first-team experience after joining National League club Oldham Athletic on loan.

The versatile youngster was a regular in the Red Devils Under-23s side last season, scoring one goal and providing six assists during 25 appearances in Premier League 2.

The 19-year-old has also met senior opposition over the last two years as he featured for United’s youngsters in Papa John’s Trophy clashes against the likes of Rochdale, Lincoln City, Bradford City and Sunderland.

However, he will now gain regular senior action after agreeing to join the Latics on loan until January.

After completing the deal on Friday afternoon, Oldham manager and former Manchester City midfielder John Sheridan told the club website: “Charlie’s a young player with lots of potential and has received a great schooling at Manchester United in their U18s and U23s.

“He’s currently on the right path to have a fantastic career and I’m sure he’ll thrive in a first-team environment.

“He’s got pace, he’s versatile and I’m looking forward to seeing him over the coming months for us.”

Wellens could make the first senior start of his career when his new side host unbeaten National League leaders Chesterfield on Saturday afternoon.

He was not the only United youngster to secure a loan deal this week as Will Fish and Ethan Galbraith made similar moves to Hibernian and Salford City respectively.

Highly-rated midfielder Hannibal Mejbri also completed a loan move as he joined Championship club Birmingham City earlier this week.

The Tunisian international will spend the remainder of the season with the second-tier side and made his Blues debut in a 2-1 home defeat against Norwich City on Tuesday night.
