Manchester United have been charged by the Football Association over their players’ reaction to Brighton & Hove Albion captain Lewis Dunk’s tackle on Anthony Elanga.

The incident, which occurred in the second half of their Premier League clash on Tuesday evening, saw Dunk bring down Elanga after the latter dispossessed him and the foul was seen to be stopping an obvious goalscoring opportunity after a VAR review.

Referee Peter Bankes was immediately swarmed by the Red Devils’ players and received boos from the Old Trafford faithful for initially showing Dunk a yellow card. However, the official was asked to review his decision by Jarred Gillett, who was in charge of VAR, leading to the Seagulls’ captain being dismissed.

The reaction from United’s players didn’t go down well with Brighton manager Graham Potter, who expressed his thoughts on the situation after the game.

A statement from the FA said: “Manchester United FC has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E.20.1 following its Premier League game against Brighton & Hove Albion FC on Tuesday (15/2/22).

“It is alleged that Manchester United FC failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the 53rd minute, and the club has until Monday (21/2/22) to provide a response.”

United won the game 2-0 after goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes, moving them up to fourth in the table.

This result was the first in four matches where Ralf Rangnick’s side didn’t let a one goal lead slip.
