Woman dies after falling from bridge on M61 between Chorley and Bolton

Police were called to the bridge by the M61 at around 11am today

A woman has died after falling from a bridge above the M61 between Bolton and Chorley. Police were called at around 11am today. 

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “We were called shortly after 11am to a report of a concern for welfare of a woman on a bridge over the M61 between Bolton and Chorley. Sadly, the woman fell from the bridge a short time later and despite the best efforts of emergency crews she was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing.”

The incident led to the road being closed in both directions. The stretch of road which is closed is between junction eight for Chorley and junction six for Horwich until shortly before 1.15pm.

Police have since posted on social media to say that the road has reopened.  A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: "We posted earlier regarding a road closure on the M61. Please be advised the road is now open. We thank you for your patience."
