Wilko: Greater Manchester stores at risk of closure as company enters administration- 12,000 jobs at risk

High street chain Wilko has today officially entered into administration. This is set to affect all 400 of their stores and put 12,000 jobs at risk. 

The retailer has over a dozen stores in Greater Manchester, with all of these now under risk of closure and all staff losing their jobs. The possibility of the businesses’ collapse has been on the horizon for some time, but it was Wilko’s decision last week to file a notice of intention to appoint administrators which was the first major indication the company was in trouble.  

CEO of Wilko Mark Jackson said in a statement: "We've all fought hard to keep this incredible business intact but must concede that time has run out and now, we must do what's best to preserve as many jobs as possible, for as long as is possible, by working with our appointed administrators.

Mr Jackson added that there had recently been a "significant level of interest" from other firms in Wilko, "including indicative offers that we believe would meet all our financial criteria to recapitalise the business".

Wilko has until August 17 to strike up a rescue deal and save itself from collapse. It has also been announced that the brand has stopped its home delivery service.
