Wigan North Western-Preston & Manchester Airport trains delayed after person struck by train

British Transport Police confirmed the person has sadly died.

A person died after being struck by a train between Preston and Wigan North Western stations this morning (21 July).

The collision took place about 3.30am near Wigan.

Emergency services attended the scene. British Transport Police said: “British Transport Police were called to the line near Wigan at 3.34am today (21 July) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

Paramedics also attended and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are currently working to identify the full circumstances behind their death.”

National Rail has advised customers that delays were expected to services until around 10am today.

"A person has been hit by a train between Wigan North Western and Preston, “ said a spokesman. “As all lines are currently blocked, trains may be cancelled or diverted until approximately 10am.

A number of routes have been affected, including:

  • the Avanti West Coast between London Euston and Lancaster
  • the Caledonian Sleeper between London Euston and Inverness

British Transport Police have been approached for comment.
