The quaint towns and villages within an hour's drive of Manchester named among best in UK

The UK is brimming with quaint towns and villages, ideal for a day trip or weekend away visiting. A new list collated by comparison site Which? Has outlined the best of these locations across the country. 

Greater Manchester has plenty to offer, and the list also includes which are not too far outside the region. These are easily accessible by road, and each have a charm which can be experienced even on just a day trip.

The list has been put together by rating each destination based on various factors. These are food and drink, tourist attractions, scenery, attractiveness, shopping, peace and quiet. Through this, an overall percentage score is worked out. 

Topping the list for the UK is Wells in Somerset, which has a destination score of 83%. Closer to home, several spots near Manchester have also received good ratings. 

The Peak District town of Castleton is one of the better rated locations on the list. With its amazing scenery, historical castle ruins and fine selection of pubs and eateries, it has an overall rating of 75%. 

The next location which is not too far from Manchester is Buxton. The Derbyshire town has been given a strong overall rating of 70% which includes four-star ratings for peace and quiet and tourist attractions.

Rounding off the spots near to Manchester is Hebden Bridge with a destination rating of 68%. The West Yorkshire town is highly rated for food and drink, receiving a four-star rating from Which?

Hebden Bridge is less than an hour's drive from Manchester city centre, but can also be easily reached by train. A direct train from Victoria Station will take you around 45 minutes.
