Storm Malick in Manchester: Met Office issues yellow wind alert as storm due to arrive in next 48 hours

Manchester locals might need to rethink their weekend plans as the latest forecast suggests a wet and windy weekend.

This morning the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for wind with some experts predicting winds inland as strong as 70mph.

The yellow warning is in place from 6.00pmon Sunday 30 January up until 12:00pm on Monday 31 January.

The Met Office website states that the extreme weather is set to bring many disruptions to the day to day operation of public transport, and roads may close.

The following is a list of disruptions the Met Office is warning against:

Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times cancelled.

Some roads and bridges may be forced to close

There is a possibility of power cuts in some areas, and mobile services could be affected.

Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.

Tonight

Friday night will be largely cloudy, with winds picking up increasingly throughout the evening. There will be periods of rain and drizzle in hilly areas too.

Temperatures are set to be milder than previous nights this week, and staying above freezing. Minimum temperatures will be 6 °C.

Manchester can expect rain and drizzle, mostly moving southward throughout the morning. However, brighter skies and sunny spells are expected across the region as the day progresses.

Winds will start to pick up, but will stay very mild. Maximum temperatures of 10°C are expected.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday

Sunday will be mostly dry but some showers may break through in the evening. With the wind warning setting in at 6PM expect strong winds.

Temperatures will be colder going into Monday but there will be sunny spells.

Rain is set to clear on Tuesday with sunshine and showers.

This period is expected to be rather unsettled, beginning with outbreaks of rain in the Northwest on Tuesday and spreading across the whole of the UK as the day progresses.

Wednesday and Thursday, likely wet and windy in northern areas, and drier conditions in the south, with temperatures remaining mild.

As we move further into February, the largely settled and cloudy weather is likely to remain for most areas, with some rain and strong winds in the far northwest.

Temperatures are likely to be milder than average throughout this period, although some brief colder than average spells are possible in Northern areas.
