At 2pm on September 9 in Manchester, it looks set to be sunny with a high of 27C. It is this kind of weather which could be the reason for the warning, and conditions could change quickly.

At 9pm, when the warning is due to expire, the clouds will have rolled in. However, the temperature will still be at around 23C making for a warm and muggy night.

The Met Office has said what we could expect to see during the weather warning. The information is as follows:

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures

  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services

  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
