A hectic few days is expected on the North West’s railway network

To help passengers keep on top of this, Northern Trains has released a travel advice calendar for the festive period. The calendar clearly indicates when services will be at their best between Christmas Eve and the New Year, with some days seeing so services operating.

Christmas Eve itself is a day where services are expected to be disrupted, and checking train times ahead of your journey are encouraged. Christmas Day and Boxing Day there will be no Northern services running at all.

From December 27 to 29 an ‘expect disruption’ warning has been implemented by the train provider. On December 27 and 29 there are planned engineering works on the network, and December 29 will see an amended timetable in place.

Matt Rice, chief operating officer at Northern, said: “We hope the travel advice calendar will be useful for anyone on the move over Christmas. With fewer people using the network, the Christmas period is an opportunity for Network Rail to carry out a range of engineering work.

“As such, we advise customers to ‘check before you travel’ as close to the date and time of travel as possible to see if their journey is affected.”

Last week ahead of the festive period, Northern issued a zero tolerance warning to anyone abusing their staff as part of a new campaign against anti-social behaviour. It comes as the train operator revealed there have been 182 public order offences committed against its staff during 2024.
