Bus operator Metroline has taken a big step into Greater Manchester

The company has officially taken over 232 bus services in the region. This is as part of the Bee Network’s project to bring bus services in Greater Manchester into public ownership.

Today (January 6) marks the start of the next phase of the Bee Network. All bus routes in Greater Manchester are now under public ownership, making Greater Manchester the first region in 40 years to do so.

In March 2024 Metroline was awarded four franchise contracts by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. In preparation for taking on these contracts, the company set up a training school at the depot in Wythenshawe.

Numerous new jobs in Manchester have been created as a result of Metroline’s entry into the Bee Network, and the company expects to continue to become a key employer in the local community. A locally based management team of individuals with experience from across the bus industry in the North West was also brought together.

Patrick Sibley, Regional CEO for Metroline, said: “We are delighted to formally enter operation on the Bee Network, and serve the people of Greater Manchester. It has taken many months of preparation and hard work, but I’m proud of the team that we’ve brought together and the operation that we’ve been able to build in anticipation of this point.

“From highly trained professional drivers to brand new buses, we want to give local communities the best journeys possible when travelling on our services. We look forward to continuing our close working relationship with Transport for Greater Manchester as we enter operation, and are determined to deliver an outstanding transport experience for our customers on the Bee Network.”
