Manchester’s 10 richest neighbourhoods based on average income, including Withington and Didsbury

The cost of living crisis may be affecting many people in Manchester, but in these parts of the city some may be finding making ends meet a bit easier.

As the cost of living crisis continues unabated we’ve taken a look at the parts of Manchester where financial considerations might not be as fraught as in other parts of the city.

With the help of the data team at NationalWorld we’ve compiled a list of the 10 richest neighbourhoods in the city, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The best-off part of Manchester, according to the data, is Castlefield and Deansgate, where the average total household income is £73,400. The data shows starkly the scale of inequality across our city as the poorest neighbourhood in Manchester, Clayton Vale, has an average household income of well under half that, at £26,400.

The ONS analyses neighbourhoods by using what are called Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs), which divide areas down into ones of roughly similar population sizes to make statistical comparisons easier and more meaningful. These average income statistics are the most recent for neighbourhoods. They use data from the financial year ending in 2018 and were published in March 2020.

Total annual household income is the sum of the before-tax income of every member of the household, plus any income from benefits. The estimates were calculated by the ONS using various sources of information, including the 2011 Census and the annual Family Resources Survey.

So as the cost of living crisis bites across Manchester, these are the areas where at least some residents might not be feeling the pinch quite so much.
