It’s that time of year again as thousands of students across the Manchester region collect their A level results after years of hard work at school. From mathematics to media studies to psychology, teenagers have had their heads down as they’ve revised for – and then taken – their A level exams.

So much has led up to this moment, with nursery, primary school, the start of secondary and then GCSE’s all acting as stepping stones to get to this stage. Many will be hoping to move on to university next, and the grades they get could determine whether they head to their first choice or not.

As it’s been the first year since Covid-19 struck that students have sat their exams rather than having teacher assessment, Government regulator Ofqual has revealed results in 2022 will largely be worse across the board in comparison to 2021. They will however be more generous than the last time exams were sat, with the impact of the pandemic taken into account.

It can be an anxious time for Manchester’s students and parents alike, but there isn’t too much longer to stress as this year’s A level results day now isn’t too far away.

When is A level results day 2022?

Students up and down the country, including in Manchester, will receive their A level results on Thursday 18 August 2022. Most schools will be open from around 8am for students to collect their certificates.

What time will UCAS update with A level results?

You will be able to check whether or not you have been accepted into the university of choice at the same time as schools open for students to collect – 8am on Thursday 18 August 2022.

Don’t panic if your UCAS hasn’t updated at that stage, though, as sometimes it can take a few hours for it to come through on the system. It is a busy day after all.

Quite often students will find themselves right on a grade boundary, either above or below. For those who are a little less fortunate, desired results may be just a few marks off and in this instance, students can appeal the decisions previously made by exam boards.

Students can also appeal if they believe a mistake has been made. The appeal process may be especially relevant for those who have marginally missed out on a university place as a result of being just below a required mark.

For A levels and AS levels, you can ask your school or college to request a review from the exam board. If you’re a private candidate you can contact the exam board directly, or contact the school or college that submitted your exam entry.

For other qualifications such as a BTEC or an NVQ, grades can be appealed directly to the awarding organisation.

Every submitted appeal will go through the same process. The exam board will check your work for marking mistakes and your mark may change if they find any. If your mark changes your overall grade may also change, whether that be higher or lower than the original.

If you think the exam board did not handle your appeal properly, you can request a review from Ofqual. Deadlines for appeals vary by the exam board, but if appeals are made on or soon after results day, there will be no issues at all.
