It was a hat-trick for Labour in Wigan on General Election night.

In the first result of the night Labour and Jo Platt took back Leigh and Atherton. It was being officially contested for the first time with Leigh MP James Grundy not seeking re-election for the Tories. Jo Platt has regained the seat she held for two years between 2017 and 2019 following Andy Burnham’s move to become Mayor of Greater Manchester.

In Makerfield, Labour’s Yvonne Fovargue was another not seeking re-election having held the seat since 2010 but the party kept hold of the seat thanks to Josh Simons. And finally, as was widely expected, Lisa Nandy held onto the Wigan seat and is now expected to take a place in Sir Keir Starmer’s cabinet.
