Droylsden factory home to seafood company, Seamark PLC, will be demolished and replaced with 143 new homes

The site is currently home to the seafood processing company, Seamark PLC, who intend to demolish their employment buildings and build a mix of apartment blocks and homes. A total of 72 apartments will be built across five, four-storey blocks overlooking Ashton Canal.

The other 71 homes will be a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom houses. 

At a planning panel meeting last year, where the proposal was approved, the developer explained the development had already been scaled down from 225 homes to 143. The maximum height of the apartment blocks has also been reduced from six to four, the meeting in Droylsden was told.

Seamark PLC also scrapped plans for the retirement living complex following concerns raised during consultation. 

The land off Edge Lane contains the cold stores and processing units for the company, which has been in the area since 1997. Following the demolition of the factory, the employment base would move to the Seamark PLC’s new location in east Manchester.

Despite being approved by the planning panel in February last year, the plan was only given the final sign off recently.

This comes following agreements being made with Tameside Council over financial contributions to local infrastructure and affordable housing provision.
