A planning application has been submitted for a new 16-storey apartment building in Stockport. If approved, it could create up to 76 new homes in the town centre made up of one and two-bedroom apartments above two floors of working space.

The developer – Provincial Land – plans to demolish the George pub on the corner of Wellington Road North and Heaton Lane, which has been empty since 2017. Matt Shaw from Provincial Land said: “Our proposals aim to be of the highest standard in design and specification. What is happening in Stockport is exciting and we are thrilled to be part of that.”

Matt Ollier said: “The significance of the site’s location at the gateway to Stockport demanded a high level of detail. The building becomes one of a cluster around the transport interchange. The form, detail and materials take references from the listed viaduct, the terracotta clad Plaza Theatre and Stockport’s hat making heritage to create something contemporary but firmly rooted in Stockport.”

The location of the new apartment complex is oppose the Merseyway shopping centre and close to Stockport’s new transport interchange which is due to open in spring. In total, around 4,000 new homes are planned in the town centre over the coming years, including new apartments in the historic Weir Mill.

The council has focused new developments on brownfield sites in Stockport in a bid to reduce the impact on the green belt. The plans will be considered for approval by Stockport council.
