I'm the world's best female arm wrestler and my secret to winning at 53 is eating chicken liver for breakfast

The world's best female arm wrestler says her one secret to winning at age 53 is eating chicken liver for breakfast.

Three time world champion Agy Górzyńska got into the sport after beating her male colleagues at arm wrestles in their breaks 13 years ago. Now she is an eight time British national champion and recently won two gold medals - one for each arm - in the British National Championships held in Birmingham on Saturday (29/11).

And Agy credits her long success to her breakfast - tucking into a plate of fried chicken livers, brown toast, eggs, and spinach, raw eggs and milk three times a week. Agy, a leisure centre manager, from Manchester, said: "This is the best breakfast ever!

"My wife and my friends think I'm crazy but it's a great breakfast and has kept me strong as I've got older. It's so nutritious and sets me up perfectly for my training sessions. If you want to keep strong this is what you need to be eating. I'm really really proud of my latest win. I like to be a good strong example for all the girls and women in British arm wrestling."

Left-handed Agy wrestles with both arms following an injury to her left in 2018. Surprisingly her upper arms are 38cm around - just over the average of 37cm. Agy can bench press over 100kg, but she said it's not about the big numbers.

She said: "I'm athletic and strong but I don't have massive stand-out muscles. It's about control and technique as well as strength. I train hard but it's not about looking like you have big muscles. Getting enough rest and eating a balanced diet are just as important for your training as working hard."

Agy took up karate and body building aged 15, and moved to the UK from Poland in 2005. She began arm wrestling her male colleagues during breaks at a building-site security job she started in 2009.

Agy often won the wrestles, and her colleagues, all men, said she should take up the sport professionally. Agy searched online and joined a group in Wigan in 2012. Now she trains twice a week at the club, and at the gym three days a week.

She said: "I hadn't arm wrestled before but I realised I really enjoyed it, and I enjoy the training. It's not just your arm you need to work on, but everything around it, and also your forearm, and grip strength."

Agy won at her first competition, the British Nationals, in Lancashire, in 2013. At the World championships in Lithuania, 2014, Agy won her first medal - bronze in the 80kg+ class. “I cried. It felt amazing", she said.

Agy, who weighs around 80kg switched to the under 80kg category and won her first gold at the world championships in Bulgaria in 2017. She said: "It felt amazing! I'm still so proud of this medal."

She went on to win the World championship again in France in 2022 and Greece in 2025. And Agy won the European championships in Poland, 2020, and Estonia this year. Agy said: "I'd love to see more women take up the sport.

“Weight training is really good for women especially approaching the menopause, and it's really good for mental health. There is a lovely and really supportive community in female arm wrestling in the UK. Training is good for you, and winning is fun and boosts your confidence."
