Oldham hospital ‘hostage’ incident: police arrest armed man on suspicion of kidnap

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of kidnap following an incident outside Royal Oldham Hospital.
GMP were called to reports of a man with knives in a car outside the main Accident & Emergency entrance at 5.30pm yesterday (29 August), following an initial incident on Grisebeck Way in Oldham.

Hide AdArmed officers, together with the Police Helicopter and North West Ambulance Service attended and a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of kidnap. Police did not provide any further details about the kidnap but said no-one was hurt and there was no wider threat to the public.
Chief Inspector Mark Allinson from GMP, said: “Shortly before 5:30pm we were called to The Royal Oldham Hospital following reports of a male in possession of bladed weapons who had gained access to a car outside the main Accident & Emergency entrance.
“Specialist armed officers arrived quickly and were able to safely take control of the situation which was brought to a swift conclusion. There is no risk to the wider public and there is no ongoing disruption at The Royal Oldham Hospital. This was an isolated incident and a 31-year-old male has been arrested as enquiries continue.”
