Number of dog thefts in Greater Manchester revealed plus the most stolen breeds
Here are the most commonly stolen dog breeds in the UK – and how many were stolen in Greater Manchester in 2022.
There were just five reported dog thefts in Greater Manchester last year, according to new research – much less than in other parts of the country.
Pet insurance company Direct Line has compiled the data using Freedom of Information requests filed to police forces across the country. GMP said it had five reported thefts and that no-one had been charged in any of the cases.
At the other end of the scale, London has been named the dog theft capital of the UK, with 396 reports made to the Metropolitan Police in 2022.
With around 2,160 reported cases in 2022, the overall number of dog thefts has decreased since 2021 when 2,760 dogs were reported stolen. However, last year only one in four stolen dogs were successfully reunited with their owners, according to the data.
The figures also reveal which dog breeds are the most commonly stolen across the country.
