One of the Northern Quarter’s longest-running independent cafes is closing its doors for good at the end of the week – much to the dismay of its customers, who have taken to social media to show their appreciation of the “OG” NQ coffee shop.

North Tea Power has been a stalwart of the ever-evolving Northern Quarter food and drink scene for the last 13 years. In that time, they became one of Manchester’s leading coffee specialists, serving up a variety of blends, as well as loose-leaf teas and homemade lunches, snacks, pickles and baked goods.

The owners of Tib Street’s North Tea Power announced the forthcoming closure in an Instagram post, saying: “You may have heard word on the street, you might not have believed your ears… Things are constantly changing here in NQ, over the past 13 years it’s been our pleasure to be a part of it all. After some tough decisions and some careful considerations, it seems that the right thing to do is to end our journey here.

“No time for frowns however, you still have a week’s worth of sun to come and enjoy a brew before we close our door for the final time this Sunday 18th June 2023.”

The coffee shop attracted customers from all walks of life – students, remote workers, skaters, families, dog owners – and hundreds of them have expressed their shock over the closure on social media. The phrase many people in the comments sections have used to describe the much-loved coffee shop is “OG”.

One Instagram follower said: “NTP was my introduction to speciality coffee in the UK, and a frequent safe haven to escape the madness of student life in Manchester for a few hours many years ago. The original and best.”

Many of the commenters have also claimed to be among NTP’s first ever customers. One wrote: “DEVO’d !! You guys started the coffee movement in my city and will forever be remembered for that. Megaaaaa Independent coffee, brews and all round good vibes!”

Another commented: “NTP is THE OG coffee shop and part of the proper old school places of the NQ.”

Other coffee shops have also commented on the closure, including fellow Tib Street cafe, Just Between Friends. They said: “Another loss to the Northern Quarter. Best of luck with any future plans guys.”

  • North Tea Power will close on 18 June and there is a public farewell event planned for Friday 16 June.
