A school in Manchester is amongst several from the region to have had success at the 2023 Educate Awards. The awards are a way of recognising outstanding achievement at schools across the North West.

During the ceremony at Liverpool Cathedral and in front of around 700 people, Manchester Academy in Moss Side took home The Communication Award. This award is given to schools which have a strong level of communication within its community and with stakeholders.

The Educate Awards’ judges were amazed at Manchester Academy’s dedication to ensuring that no one is left out of communication. With over 80% EAL students and around 70 languages spoken, the academy combined mainstream communication techniques with innovations like translation pop-ups on the website to translating pages into other languages.

Manchester school, Wright Robinson College, made the final of this year’s Educate Awards and was named as the runner-up for the Outstanding Commitment to the Environment award, with judges noting the steps made to develop environmentally friendly students, staff and buildings at the college in addition to the time and money invested into environmental projects.

Manchester indie band The Height performed during the ceremony. The band is made up of singer John Denton from All Hallows RC High School, bassist Brandon Greenalgh from Co-Op Swinton High School, and drummer Ted Ellis, who is a student at BIMM Music Institute. The Height performed covers of The Smiths’ There Is a Light That Never Goes Out and Courteeners’ Not Nineteen Forever in addition to their very own song, Salford Sound.

Kim O’Brien, founder of the Educate Awards, said: “Congratulations to Manchester Academy for winning The Communication Award at this year’s Educate Awards! A huge thank you The Height for performing on the night

“A big well done to the runners-up and finalists too. Results this year were incredibly close, and judges had a difficult time deciding not only the shortlist but also overall the winners.

“The Educate Awards team is proud to champion the innovation, diversity and dedication that is taking place in educational establishments around the region. Entries will open again in February 2024, and we encourage all types of schools and colleges to submit as many entries as they like, for free.”
