Manchester-based mental health and music charity Headstock has commissioned an artist for a special mural in the city. The work will be of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain who died of suicide back in 1994.

To mark the 30th anniversary of his death, the organisation has launched a fundraiser to raise money for the work. Commissioned with the mural is an artist who has already made their impact on the region. Akse P19 is known for his artworks of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis and Keith Flint of The Prodigy. Both were unveiled ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day as Headstock awareness projects.

The artist has built up a strong portfolio, having also been behind works of David Bowie and Manchester United's Marcus Rashford. His photo-realistic works are eye-catching and help to project the often powerful message behind them.

The Kurt Cobain mural is set to be painted on the side of The Bread Shed, a music venue near to Oxford Road. Accompanying the mural will be a contact number for mental health support service Shout 85258.

Kurt Cobain and Nirvana took the musical world by storm in the late 1980s and early 1990s. They released three albums, with the last being ’In Utero’ which was released in 1993.

During their career, Nirvana played two gigs in Manchester. The first of these was in October 1989 at the Manchester Polytechnic Students Union on the ‘Heavier Than Heaven’ tour. Their second and final appearance in the city was at Manchester Academy in 1991. This was the tour that followed the release of hit album ‘Nevermind’ and was named after the record.  You can donate to the fundraiser by visiting the Headstock Crowdfunder page. A target of £3,500 has been set by the organisation.
