Local councils in Manchester are gearing up for the next upcoming local election, which taking place today.
As it is a local election, it will be the first one for four years, with key political moments happening since 2018.

When is the local election?
The local election in Manchester is due to take place today, Thursday, 5 May 2022.
Polling stations up and down the country will open at 7am and close at 10pm on the day.
How many councillors are there?
10 councils are part of the Greater Manchester area, they are: Manchester City Council, Bury Council, Bolton Council, Rochdale Council, Oldham Council, Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council, Trafford Council, Wigan Council and Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council.

Hide AdThe Manchester City Council currently has 19 councillors. The political party of 18 of the 19 is Labour, with Councillor John Leech being the only one not with Labour, with his political party being Liberal Democrats.
In the Salford City Council, there are 18 councillors. 15 of the councillors in Salford are also aligned with the Labour Party, with three of the councillors being with the Conservatives. Those councillors are Councillor Karen Garrido, Councillor Robin Garrido and Councillor Ari Leitner.

- Bury - All 51 seats are being voted on in the upcoming election.
- Manchester - 32 of the 96 seats in Manchester are being voted on in the upcoming election.
- Rochdale - All 60 seats in Rochdale are being voted on in the upcoming election.
- Oldham - ⅓ of the seats are being voted on in Oldham, that’s 20 out of 60 in the upcoming election.
- Tameside - 19 out of 57 seats are being voted on in the upcoming election.
- Trafford - 22 out of 63 - seats are being voted on in the upcoming election.
- Wigan - 26 out of 75 seats are being voted on in the upcoming election.
- Stockport - 21 out of 63 seats are being voted on in the upcoming election.
What is the party in power?
Bolton - Conservatives hold 20 seats, which isn’t enough for a majority vote but the most out of the other parties. The Conservatives have a minority administration with an arrangement with other parties.
Bury - 26 seats are needed for a majority and Labour currently hold 27 seats in this constituency.
Manchester - In Manchester there are 96 seats, 49 are needed for the majority and Labour currently hold 94.
Rochdale - 31 seats are needed for the majority in Rochdale, with the Labour party currently holding 45 seats.

Hide AdTameside - Labour are currently in power in Tameside. The only blow for Tameside in the 2018 election was a Conservative gain from Labour in the Hyde Werneth ward.
Trafford - The administration in Trafford is currently Labour.
Wigan - 38 seats are needed for the majority in Wigan, Labour hold 57.
Stockport - Before the 2022 election takes place, the Liberal Democrats currently hold 26, and Labour hold 25.
