The California-inspired cult Manchester burger in the running for major national award

A Manchester burger is one of 16 in line to win a major award next month. That Burger Place’s Golden Gate Smash has been nominated for the top prize at the 2024 National Burger Awards. 

The competition will see chefs – including from restaurants, pubs and street food traders – go head-to-head in a live cooking showdown to see whose signature burger creation will be named best in the UK. And the burger joint from Bolton Road, Walkden, is among the finalists at the event at Big Penny Social in London on February 20. Founded by chef Ryan McDermott, That Burger Place specialises in California-inspired burger smashers. 

In addition to the signature round, chefs will participate in a technical challenge that will see them create a burger from a specific selection of ingredients supplied by event sponsors in a bid to be crowned Burger Chef of the Year.  Winners will be chosen by a hand-picked panel of industry judges, including former victors of the competition.
