Man seriously injured and taken to hospital after being hit by car in Stockport - police make arrest

A man is in hospital with injuries that are feared to be life-changing after he was struck by a car in Stockport in an incident which has sparked an urgent police investigation.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the incident happened on Brinnington Road near the junction with Yates Street at around 8.20pm on Monday 6 February.

A man has already been arrested in connection with the incident and police are searching for another man who fled the scene in a vehicle.

Police are treating this as an isolated incident but are urging anyone with information about what happened to come forward and speak to officers.

What happened on Brinnington Road in Stockport?

Police said they were called to the scene after receiving reports expressing concern for a man’s welfare. When they arrived they found he had been struck by a car. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries which are believed to be life-changing.

A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of going equipped to commit robbery. Another man fled the scene in a car and police are in the process of trying to track him down. GMP have also managed to seize a car matching the description of the one which was driven away from the incident.

Stockport CID is now leading the investigation and following up multiple lines of inquiry. They have said they believe this to be a one-off incident and are urging anyone with information that could help them to speak to officers.

What have the police said?

Detective Superintendent Helen Critchley from GMP’s Stockport District said: “I understand that this attack will cause concern in the community. I would, however, like to offer some reassurance that we are treating this as an isolated incident and believe there is no wider risk to the public.

“Our investigation is progressing at pace and our officers will be carrying out an increased number of high-visibility patrols and will remain in the area to offer advice and support. If you have any concerns, please speak to them.

“Likewise, if you know anything about this incident, or you have footage - including CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage - that may help our investigation, please report it to GMP.

“We are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have been in the area of Yates Street and Dawson Street near Brinnington Road on Monday 6 February 2023 at around 8.20pm.”
