Adding: “I take full responsibility for this error. I would like to take this opportunity to repeat that it was never my intention to do anything other than pay the right amount.”

Angela Rayner also mentions her personal story in the latter, she said: “For a teenage mum from a council estate in Stockport to serve as the highest level of government has been the honour of my life.”

Downing Street has shared a handwritten letter from Prime Minister Keir Starmer to his former deputy, Angela Rayner.

He says that he's "very sad that your time as deputy prime minister, secretary of state and deputy leader of the Labour Party has ended in this way.”

Adding that Angela Rayner was "right" to refer herself to the independent adviser on ministerial standards and "right to act on his conclusion.”

While Angela Rayner will no longer be Housing Secretary or Deputy Prime Minister, she will continue to be the MP for Ashton-under-Lyne.
