How to recycle your Christmas tree in Greater Manchester

We’ve rounded up how you can recycle your real Christmas tree across the Greater Manchester boroughs in January 2022.

Note some councils have temporarily suspended green waste collections due to staff shortages so you advised to check your local council’s website for any bin collection date changes.

Bolton Council: For a charge of £16 the council will to collect and recycle a real Christmas tree. Call 01024 336632 before Friday 7 January to arrange a collection.

Alternatively, you can take your Christmas tree free of charge to the tip.

Bury Council: Real Christmas trees can be recycled in your brown bin minus any decorations or wooden bases. You must chop it up so it fits inside your brown bin with the lid fully closed. Alternatively, you can take it to one of the local household waste and recycling centres.

Manchester Council: You can recycle your real Christmas tree in January by leaving it beside your green bin on the usual collection day, or taking it to your nearest recycling centre. If you live in a flat or apartment, the council advises you speak to your caretaker or building manager. If this is not possible, email to: [email protected] with your name and address, a description of the location where you’ll leave the tree and when you’ll be putting it there.

Oldham Council: You can recycle your Christmas tree in your green bin – just chop it into small pieces, remove the wooden block from the base and any decorations.

Alternatively, take it to your local tip or to one of the following recycling ‘drop off’ points fromuntil 31 January:

  • Higher Memorial Park (car park), Joseph Street, Failsworth (open dawn until dusk)
  • Royton Park (car park) off Bleasdale Street, Royton. Anytime access
  • Werneth Park (car park) off Frederick Street, Werneth (open dawn until dusk)
  • Churchill Playing Fields (car park), Wellington Road, Greenfield. Anytime access.

Rochdale Council: You can recycle your Christmas tree by chopping it up and putting it in your brown recycling bin. The trunk needs to be thinner than your wrist and the lid must shut. Or you can take it to these drop-off points from 4-9 January 2022.

  • Bank Top – open space off Cherwell Avenue, Heywood OL10 4SY
  • Hopwood Park, Coronation Avenue, Heywood OL10 2HZ

Salford Council: You can you can recycle your Christmas tree in your garden and food waste bin if it is chopped up or take it to your local recycling centre.

Stockport Council: Real Christmas trees can be recycled by chopping them up to compost in your green bin.Alternatively, they can be taken them to a local Household Waste and Recycling Centre.

Tameside Council: You can leave your tree next to your brown food and garden bin on the usual collection days from Monday 10 January.

Trafford Council: You can chop up your Christmas tree and put it in your green bin. Trees left beside the bin won’t be collected. Alternatively, you can go to your local recycling centre - or visit one of these drop-off points.

Collection points are open until Monday 17 January. You can drop your real tree at the following locations:

  • Cross Lane Park Car Park – Moss Lane
  • Flixton Park Car Park – Flixton Road
  • Hullard Park Yard – Northumberland Road
  • Longford Park Car Park – Rye Bank Road
  • Stamford Park Car Park – Stamford Park Road
  • Walkden Gardens Car Park – Derbyshire Road
