The Greater Manchester town was one of around 20 ‘outlined’ for a rally on Wednesday night according to information shared online. A small number of protestors did gather but fears of the likes of the disorder seen in recent days proved unfounded.
In the lead up to the rumoured protest, several Wigan businesses closed their doors early to protect staff and customers. Plenty of police were on hand on Wednesday night in the area around SWAP (Support for Wigan Arrivals Project) on Penson Street.
The counter protest saw the people of Wigan bring with them placards, with one reading “Wigan against Muppets” and another stating “Gluten intolerance, racist intolerant.”
