Gary Lineker joins strikers: Former footballer was spotted with rail workers at Manchester Piccadilly station

Sports broadcaster and former footballer, Gary Lineker OBE, was pictured outside of Manchester Piccadilly in a picket line with striking train workers.

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) strikes over low pay, working conditions and the threat of potential job losses have continued throughout this week.

Manchester South RMT shared the photo on Twitter - which received a lot of backlash saying that the BBC pundit was jumping on the “bandwagon”.

However, Twitter users who support the RMT strikes were pleased with Lineker’s presence and claimed that more “high profile people” should join.

And of course, it didn’t take people long to make a football joke in regards to the former England international forward (striker).

Also in Manchester, huge crowds have been seen waiting for buses to Glastonbury as the strikes have caused travel chaos with over 80% of train services cancelled across the county.

Secretary-General of the RMT, Mick Lynch, announced that there may be more planned strike action over the summer, in order for the union to "continue its industrial campaign until a negotiated settlement is reached."
