An exotic fish at Manchester’s Sea Life centre has developed an unusual obsession with Peppa Pig.

Aquarium staff and visitors noticed the copperband butterfly fish behaving strangely after a toy of the popular cartoon character was placed in its tank ahead for the Peppa Pig activity trail event starting on 5 September.

Although this type of fish does form monogamous breeding pairs, they are also very territorial and often kept separated.

Jenn McDonough, General Manager at Sea Life Manchester, said: “This is a very unexpected and unique situation.

“Although both Peppa and George toys have been placed with the fish for the event, the copperband only seems interested in the Peppa figure, swimming in circles around it in a protective manner.

“They share no similarity in looks, except for their prominent snout like nose and the animal care team are more surprised than anyone that this could occur.

Another theory behind the fish’s obsession with the figurine is the fact it shares a tank with a pair of seahorses, which mate for life.

The Peppa Pig adventure trail will take place on 5 September-25 September and includes a whole host of activities, photo opportunities and appearances from the nation’s favourite pig herself. Tickets are available here.
