New Year’s Honours List 2023: Every Mancunian to be recognised by the King

The New Year’s Honours List for 2023 has been revealed, highlighting the work of outstanding individuals in all sectors of society – including, health, education, science, business and the arts.

Of the 1,107 people on the 2023 list, there are 35 who are either from Greater Manchester or who have been recognised for their work in Greater Manchester.

There are two police officers from the region on the list, including Asrar Ul-Haq DL, who was one of the first Asian officers to serve with Greater Manchester Police. He is set to receive an OBE for his work bringing together people from different faiths and building positive relationships between marginalised communities and law enforcement. The second GMP officer to be recognised is Jim Jones, who will receive a BEM for his work with veterans and helping them find a career in the police force.

Other notable names on the list include former Manchester City player and England footballer Lucy Bronze, who will become a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contribution to football.

The co-founders of Didsbury gin Mark Smallwood and Liam Manton will become Medallists of the Order of the British Empire for their contribution to the Greater Manchester community during the coronavirus pandemic. During that period, they halted gin production and began producing hand sanitiser.
