Deansgate will be transformed into the seaside at the end of this month as part of the citywide Manchester Day celebrations.

This year, the big day falls on Saturday 29 July and there will be a whole program of events taking place in the city centre from 9am-6pm.

The theme for this year is Manchester Day on Holiday, and there will be a traditional helter skelter, cabin crew performances and sand sculptures. People are also encouraged to grab their deckchairs and head into town. There will be other activities, including live performances on the main stage from a whole host of local artists.

The big difference between this year’s Manchester Day celebrations and previous years’ is that there will not be a parade. Instead, Manchester City Council are partnering with outdoor arts experts Walk the Plank to provide performances and entertainment throughout the day all over the city.

Councillor Pat Karney, Chair of Manchester Day, said:  “Mark the day in your calendars and get ready for Manchester to be the number one holiday destination on the 29th July.  People always say that the only thing Manchester doesn’t have is a beach, well, not for long!

“The seaside in the city centre is one of the many new and unexpected events that we will be organising this year. We can’t wait to reveal what else we’ve got planned, keep your eyes peeled!”
