Our sister title NationalWorld found that admissions nationwide have risen by 33% in a week, as the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron variants continued to drive a new wave of infections.

It comes as case numbers have also been rising across Greater Manchester, leading to a call in the city from the public health boss for anyone eligible to have the spring booster jab who has not yet come forward to do so.

What does the data show for hospitalisations across Greater Manchester?

The data shows that the majority of hospital trusts in Greater Manchester saw an increase in admissions with Covid-19 in the latest week (up to 3 July) than in the previous one (the week ending 26 June).

At Bolton NHS Foundation Trust the number of admissions went up from 65 to 98, while at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust people who were positive for Covid-19 in hospital went up from 44 to 62.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust had an increase in admissions with the coronavirus from 131 to 162, while the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust saw a small rise from 124 patients to 131.

Cancer hospital The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust also saw increases in the relatively small number of patients with Covid they treated.

The rise in admissions with Covid-19 was not seen across the whole of Greater Manchester, though.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh (WWL) Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust saw the number of Covid-positive patients it treated fall, from 56 in the week ending 26 June to 54 in the one up to 3 July.

And Tameside and Glossop NHS Foundation Trust also had a reduction in patients with Covid, from 37 in the week up to 26 June to 30 in the week ending 3 July.

Among the hospitals that saw rises the most significant percentage rise was in Bolton, where there was an increase of 51%.

The percentage rise at the Greater Manchester Mental Health trust was higher but mental health trusts were excluded from NationalWorld’s analysis of the figures because of the very small number of patients involved (fewer than 20 in the case of the trust in the city-region).

About the data

A patient is counted if they tested positive for Covid-19 in the 14 days before they were admitted to hospital or if they caught the novel coronavirus once they were in hospital.

They could be receiving treatment for Covid-19 or primarily for something else.

Only in-patients are counted in the analysis, which comes from the UK Covid dashboard.

What is the national situation?

UK government coronavirus figures show 11,028 patients were admitted to hospital with Covid in the seven days to 4 July, up from 8,295 in the week to 27 June.

That was the first time weekly admissions have risen above 11,000 since mid-April.
