The furlough scheme, rolled out by the Government to try to protect jobs during the pandemic, ends today (Thursday) - with around nearly one million workers estimated to be affected by the wind-down.

Forecasters at the Bank of England have predicted a small rise in unemployment following the conclusion of the wage top-up scheme.

Official govenment figures for the whole of Greater Manchester indicate 65,000 people were on furlough in the city-region at the end of July, the latest available stats.

This week, the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce noted that some employers in Manchester were struggling to recruit due to skill shortages - especially in professional and managerial roles, logistics, drivers and warehousing operators, hospitality and health and social care.

And there has been a spike in people searching ‘Indeed jobs’ and ‘Manchester City Council jobs’ in the city-region over the last month.

With all that in mind, we’ve highlighted five different roles with large employers across different sectors experiencing demand in Manchester, to give a flavour of what’s out there.

Manchester United: match-day hospitality, various roles

Could the Theatre of Dreams have the job of your dreams? The club is hiring matchday waiting staff, bar staff, retail assistant and back-of-house workers in the kitchen for match days. People and team working skills are a must. Salary undisclosed. Apply via the club website here.

Royal Mail: seasonal mail sorters for Christmas

Christmas is of course Royal Mail’s busiest time and they need flexible temporary workers to sort mail in the Ancoats area.

Previous warehouse experience is a bonus but essentially you’ll need to enjoy working at a fast pace, be flexible and be able to stand up for long periods and also move some heavy trolleys. Pay ranges from £11.40 to £13.70 per hour depending on the shifts.

Costa: barrista

Costa in Manchester’s Arndale centre is seeking a barrista who can whip up a fantastic flat white but also be great at customer service and work as part of a team. Starting salary ranges from £9.36 – 10.36 and you get lots of staff discounts and rewards on top. Apply via the Costa website here.

Ocado: delivery driver

Ocado says the main thing it wants (aside from a driving licence) is a positive attitude. Unlike some driving jobs, it’s a permanent contract with set hours and pays £16.46 an hour, working out of the Cheadle area. Apply via Ocado Group here.
