These are the 10 most polluted neighbourhoods in Manchester including Ancoats and Ardwick

Manchester has significant problems with air pollution according to the Indices of Multiple Deprivation data compiled by the government - and these are where the problems are worst.

Manchester’s issues with air pollution are well documented - and analysis of government data has once again indicated the scale of the problem as well as offering a local insight into what is happening.

Our sister title NationalWorld has gone through the Indices of Multiple Deprivation data published in 2019 by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC). It shows at neighbourhood level a composite air quality score worked out by establishing the levels of four pollutants: nitrogen dioxide (NO2), benzene, sulphur dioxide and particulates (tiny particles of matter such as PM2.5 and PM10).

The data shows the scale of air pollution problems in the city, as every single one of the 57 neighbourhoods in Manchester has an air quality score above the England average. The pollutants for which levels are being estimated are all ones linked to causing ill health.

It comes as ManchesterWorld has repeatedly highlighted the issue, with more recent data on NO2 and particulates showing that monitoring stations across Greater Manchester recorded PM2.5 levels above the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines in 2021 and that NO2 guidelines were also regularly breached at some city centre sites in the same year.
