First in the north: This hospital is first in region to offer this pioneering prostate treatment

This pioneering treatment for enlarged prostates could be a game changer – and now it’s available for the first time in the north of England.

Men suffering from Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) – a non-cancerous enlarged prostate, now have access to robotic Aquablation therapy.

This pioneering treatment is being offered at The Yorkshire Clinic, part of Ramsay Health Care, and could spell the end of suffering for some of the 3million men in the UK who have the condition.

But what is it?

About Robotic Aquablation Therapy

The therapy uses imaging, robotic and a heat-free waterjet to give long-lasting relief from urinary and other issues associated with an enlarged prostate.

Whilst surgical intervention has been the norm for this condition, and can provide effective symptom relief, there are complications associated with it which can include incontinence, erectile or ejaculatory dysfunction.

Aquablation therapy is minimally invasive and clinical studies* have shown it offers both relief from the symptoms and low complication rates – regardless of prostate size or shape.

Computers are used to control high-pressure water to destroy some of the prostate tissue, making it smaller. The procedure usually takes around 40 minutes to an hour and the patient will only need to stay in hospital for a couple of hours for observation.

The benefits include improvement in the BPH symptom score, improved flow of urine and. This technology may reduce the risk of incontinence and loss of sexual function when compared to other techniques.

“We are thrilled to announce the introduction of Aquablation Therapy at The Yorkshire Clinic to our complement of services. As the first Hospital in the North to offer this pioneering treatment it demonstrates our commitment to providing our patients with the most advanced and effective treatment options available."

Hospital Director at The Yorkshire Clinic, Deana Squire

There are seven surgeons from across Yorkshire working collaboratively to launch the service. One of them, Consultant Urologist, Mr Omer Baldo, explained: “Aquablation therapy is a game changer for patients with enlarged prostates. The utilisation of heat-free water power results in improved urinary symptoms and whilst we cannot eliminate all complications, the risk of urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction is significantly reduced.
